and published in 1904 by Mr. A. H. Bullen. The copy­right is now held by Messrs. Sidgwick and Jackson, Ltd., who, with what can only be described as extravagant generosity, put the book at my disposal.
To the modern authors herein represented and to their publishers my hearty thanks are due for their permission to include so much. I would like to have been able to include an extract from " A Shropshire Lad," but Professor A. E. Hous-man refuses all anthologists; and Mr. Austin Dobson has declined to consent to " The Malt worm's Madrigal " appearing here.
